What Does “Hosted” Really Mean?

By
1 Minute Read

In our previous post, we discussed the differences between on-premise solutions and data centers. Now, let’s move on to "hosted" solutions and the benefits they can provide.

"Hosted" services refer to technology services from a provider who takes responsibility for hosting the physical servers running the service. Servers are located off-premise, with access typically provided through a direct network or internet connection. Three types of hosted services include software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and infrastructure as a service (IaaS).

What are the benefits of hosted software solutions?

Cost

Purchasing, maintaining, and upgrading your hardware and software can be expensive, including implementation, licensing, equipment, and other miscellaneous costs. Hosted solutions are typically subscription- based and are billed monthly, providing a different cost of ownership model – that is, an expense versus a capital expenditure.

Reliability and Security

Most hosted solutions include a stable infrastructure, redundancy, and guaranteed availability in their agreements, taking full responsibility in regards to the safety, security, and performance of your software.

Maintenance

Continuous system maintenance, upgrades, and monitoring require on-premise IT resources to stay current with new releases and patches. Hosted solutions, however, allow internal resources to focus on more important projects, making ongoing maintenance a contracted task.

Help Desk Resources

Hosted solutions frequently include help desk resources to provide user support, which reduces the number of calls to your IT help desk.

Flexible Work Practices

Hosted solutions allow users to work from anywhere with an internet connection, enabling collaboration and increasing productivity.

Scalability

Hosted software offers scalability, which is the ability to seamlessly resize the solution for business growth and market changes.
